"news nation" following this massive winter storm barrelling in to the northeast. it's already brought travel to a grinding halt. this is video, in fact, just coming in. the snow being blamed for a 19-car pile-up on an interstate in southern maine. state police say there were several minor injuries but you see a lot of damage to those cars and right now blizzard warnings extend from new jersey up to maine and there are some other pictures we have coming in. parts of michigan hit with more than ten inches of snow overnight. new york would get up to 15 inches. hartford, connecticut, up to two feet. meantime, massachusetts is now under a state of emergency. these are pictures from boston

where residents are bracing for up to three feet of snow. that would be enough to break the all-time record set exactly ten years ago. we're also keeping a close eye on new jersey which could get blanketed up to ten inches three months after sandy devastated the area. >> i'm a little bit more nervous because of it but i'm a little bit more prepared because of it. i have a generator. next time i stop is gas for it. >> my parents are going to a hotel because, yes. sandy was rough for a week there. older folks can't be alone in the cold so they're going to a hotel. we'll rough it out. >> do you have a generator? >> we don't have a generator. >> does that make you nervous? >> absolutely. >> and the bliz ard is also affecting travel in the northeast. more than 4,000 canceled flights through tomorrow including from london's heathrow airport to boston and new york. am track also suspending rail service in the northeast. meteorologist julie martin is

tracking the storm for us. julie, where are seeing i guess the most intense snowfall right now? >> from connecticut to maine and massachusetts but really to put it in perspective, we are just getting going here. this storm just starting to wind up. in cities like boston, dealing with a slushy mess and snow right now. maine heavy snow for you. new york, just starting to turn over to snow but by the evening rush around 5:00 p.m. really going to get blasted there in new york city. heavy snow expected tonight. could pick up another eight inches to a foot and the word of caution today is get out early, get off the roads. many governors wanting you to do that very thing. here's a look at tomorrow then. still dealing with blizzard-like conditions in the cities including boston. this is a long duration of that and that's a problem with this system. storm:con for boston is a 10.

that's the highest level here at the weather channel. you need caution with this. seeing the blizzard-like conditions, additional 12 to 18 inches tonight. the winds ferocious. also gusting up to 60 miles per hour so we'll see blowing, whiteout conditions in massachusetts tonight in to through tomorrow, as well. where we pick up another five to eight inches so blizzard-like conditions for another 24 to 36 hours in the city of boston. and we are looking at very impressive snow totals. 18 to 24 inches. new york city, also, very high alert for you. we're at a 9. we are going to see that mix as i mentioned start to taper off and then switch over to snow this evening and likely pick up about a foot and those blinding blizzard-like conditions. you can imagine, travel at a stand still in the northeast right now. it's going to be that way throughout the weekend. over to you. >> thank you, julie. now the weather channel's eric fisher live in boston where people could see the largest snowfall ever there. what's the latest?

>> reporter: tamron, we have people walking around in the storm as snow picking up this afternoon. we expect the brunt of it. this is the story of snowstorms. where the big action? it is moving in in the course of the afternoon. once it starts to rip this evening, seeing high snowfall rates. we have the old yard stick. the record snowfall right about in there. it would be up over my knees getting to that point and set back in 2003. the latest updates here, basically this is the time where all of the officials in the state saying please do not go on the roads. as of this hour, they have stopped tolls on the mass pike. so people can get through those if they need to, especially the emergency workers. we also have a state of emergency in the state of massachusetts. we've got an executive order banning travel effective 4:00 p.m. from the governor's office so they're taking the storm very seriously. they know as we have been broadcasting for days as we head through the afternoon and in to tonight, the winds pick up.

if you look around me, less than an inch an hour. you can imagine what it looks like, not much. a whiteout. you just will have impossible conditions leading in to tomorrow morning. as we head through today, we'll start to be dug out and i talked to a woman here from florida. she had a flight today canceled and she was told monday maybe get out of boston. strong impacts here, tamron, probably lasting through the weekend and next week. >> thank you. now let's get to nbc's ron motte in providence, rhode island. a state of emergency is issued for them, as well. >> reporter: absolutely. good day to you. it's snowing this mix for five and a half hours and it's only starting to crank up. we expect this to go on for 24 hours. the concern is the consistency of the mix. there's a lot of moisture in this stuff. i picked up some snow here off the ground and packing it down it's very heavy and the concern is what this will do sitting on tree limbs.

looks healthy on the outside. you don't know what's going on the inside and expected to shed smaller limbs and the bigger branches could come down on the power lines and there's concern of widespread power outages and could be a problem tonight especially when the winds pick up. here in providence, the governor let the nonessential nonessential emergency personnel go home trying to get the streets clear. it is pretty quiet downtown providence all day, a good thing. people out trying to get last-minute things and snow supplies, shoes, batteries and of that sort and trying to tell people, please, stay home f. you're home now, don't come back out until it is safe to do so which is probably not until sunday or so. this whole term thundersnow, tam c ron, we expect to see it here. the winds along the atlantic coast in to maine, 55 to 75 miles per hour. i can't imagine what that's

going to look like in ten hours from now but things are starting to get bad here in providence and asking folks to get off the streets, tamron. >> thank you. now ron allen in hartford, connecticut. another state where they have a state of emergency in effect. are you seeing conditions worsening there for you, ron? >> reporter: absolutely. >> you're like dumb question, tamron. >> how's the warm studio? >> i would be willing to get out there. >> reporter: i'm sorry? >> i said i'd be willing to get throughout there for another hour. i understand it will increase in several hours, ron. >> reporter: it's getting worse, yeah. you might have heard a fire engine go by and that's the reason they want the roads to be open. and people to stay off of them. we are in a parking lot of the state capitol and it's empty. they ordered nonessential workers to stay home and everybody did that. hartford for the most part is pretty quiet. main road out here, usually busy, empty.

we saw the buses going by. the governor a little while ago warned the roads can close down at any moment. afternoon. they're just waiting to see the conditions because they absolutely want to keep things clear for snowplows and other emergency vehicles to get through. now, the big concern, of course, power outages. the governor said he thought about 30% of the state might get knocked out based on previous estimates and he and others here say that the thing they're concerned about, new england has seen feet of snow accumulate. he's really searched about the forecast of winds. high winds. snow. through the night. that's a very difficult combination. they have prepositioned a lot of emergency crews, crews here from out of state but again seeing how it goes through the evening and in to the night. >> all right. thank you so much for the very latest. greatly appreciate it. outside of that weather system we're following, also developing news of illinois. former illinois congressman

jesse jackson jr. entered a plea deal and could be facing time behind bars. you should the terms of the deal, jackson would plead guilty to violating federal campaign laws by using contributions for personal use, including buying a rolex, furniture for his home and travel expenses of a friend. his sentence determined by a federal judge and could range from probation to as mentioned prison time. with the state of the union tuesday, we are taking a look at the president's latest approval ratding. brand new numbers out and also a popularity, how it compared to new numbers on what you think of congress and the republican leadership. then, an unlikely duo at a conference for house democrats today. former president bill clinton and stephen colbert makes appearances not together but today. >> now that you won this race that was a referendum in large measure on what the american people did not want, we have to

four days before president obama delivers his state of the union, address a new quinnipiac poll shows the job approval rating is sinking, down seven points in two minutes. 46% versus 53% in early december. the president is facing mostly dissatisfied public, just 31% of those polled say they're satisfied with how things are going in the nation. 68% are dissatisfied but

breaking the approval among minorities, the numbers soar. among hispanics, 64% and higher among african-americans, 87%. by comparison, the approval of republicans in congress, 19%. that is down six points since december. as for other big names, hillary clinton is the most popular politician in the nation. 61% polled view her favorable. president obama second at 51%. paul ryan, marco rubio, john boehner, all far behind. joining me now karen tumulte and david goodfriend. thank you for joining me. the analysis of the seven-point dive there, if that's the accurate word here, why do you believe the approval rating is sinking from december? >> a couple of things. in december, we just come off the large presidential election

where both he and his republican opponents spent inordinate amounts of money to get the point across and people weigh the two messages. mitt romney versus barack obama and now left with sort of a generic feeling of the public how do you think things are going? as you put on the screen, most americans don't feel things are going well and will blame that on an incumbent. that having been said, the president's approval ratings are still strong as you point out, strong relative to congress and historical trends. i happen to think that the biggest news out of that poll is even after the republicans tried to tar her with benghazi, hillary clinton remains unbelievably strong and i think that's very, very telling. >> does that surprise you in any way? >> no. it does surprise me. in fact, if mrs. clinton is listening, call me maybe. >> are you trying to get banned from this show? >> i won't do that again.

i was just kidding. >> don't do that again. >> besides my, kids know that song better than i do. democrats like me, people who care about politics and want to get involved are lining up even know as we speak hoping she will run to be a part of it. i think that, too, tells you something. it means that people sense there's something about her, momentum behind her. potential should she choose to run for president and this poll underscores that. >> karen, that all may be true but the issue at hand is current president is president obama. he has a huge speech, of course, with the state of the union. guns, immigration. we need the numbers coming to hispanics and african-americans. i want to read something that bob shrum say iing to ensure it not a token, the president must run out for a third term using the bully pulpit and the fire power of the political organization keeping the heat and blame on obstructionist

republicans and the notion of the obstructionist republican, obviously, resonated to some point and that you see their approval is at 19%, karen. >> yeah. i think the president kind of telegraphed this during his campaign saying that he -- one of the things he learned in the first term is even though he came to washington promising to change the way things get done here, that you don't do that from inside washington. and i think that these relatively low job approval numbers suggest in part that people are just disgusted with washington. they have seen a fiscal cliff. they have seen a lot of arguing about a sequester. they see a lot of people not getting along so i do think that this sort of permanent campaign mode is unfortunately a reality of politics today because if you're going to get anything done it is by building pressure up outside of washington. >> to your point, the constant campaigning, i want to play what the president said yesterday looking ahead to the mid serm

elections. let's play it. >> as long as we think back to whatever inspired each of us to say, maybe i can give something back, maybe i can make a difference, if we keep that in mind, every single day, i have no doubt that we'll continue the extraordinary progress that we have made already. and as a by-product of doing that good work and keeping that focus, i would expect that nancy pelosi's going to be speaker again pretty soon. >> david, obviously, interesting comments of the president there and the first read team says despite and we all know this, the debate over immigration and what to do about gun violence in this country, it is still the economy and they write, david, just in part, there's been no bridging between conservative view of austerity by measures of cutting spending cuts and what the democrats see here. as the solution, especially with sequester. we know that the democrats certainly have their plan as we have been told. they want a 50-50 split of

spending cuts and tax hikes. that's the plan democrats are leaning toward but this still really is about the economy and how to solve some of the immediate problems we have. >> yeah. i must tell you that i'm one of the progressives who agrees with the economist paul krugman on this. any time talking about deficits, we are buying in to the right wing mantra somehow deficits are killing the economy. look at great britain and doing with their austerity plans and doesn't add up. i'm much more of the mind to be proactively looking at infrastructure investment like many of the business advisers told president obama should happen. people from commerce, from industry. i get it. that won't happen as long as house republicans are dead set against it. and what we're left with is unfortunately in my view a detente to put the discussion in the frame the republicans want. what about deficits? we have a jobs crisis in this country. not a deficit crisis.

to me, the whole conversation has been pushed to the right further than it should be. >> and karen, on a last note, in anticipation of the president's speech, the white house released numbers on the people affected by the cuts. i believe around 600,000, between 600,000 and 800,000 suffering as a result of cuts to food stamps and other program that is people need to survive these days and at least some of the analysis out there, democrats feel that they can win this argument over these cuts and that it's likely we're going to hear from the president words like corporate jets, big oil in the state of the union positioning the every day working people against those against who says he not paying their fair share. >> i think there was an interesting speech this week earlier from eric cantor, the house majority leader. i think people want to hear about more than just the deficit numbers but really concrete measures that are going to be enacted to make their lives

they have joined an organization that is at war with the united states. >> joining me now is senior congressional reporter for politico. thank you for joining us, manu. >> great to be here. >> a lot of things going on. senator menendez. i know you wrote about that. how does this or at least some of the events we saw this week impact what the president says in the state of the union? >> i think that he's going to touch on all of those issues that have really come to the fore. gun control, of course, will be a big part of the early part of the session and dealt with pretty quickly in the congress before we get in to the summer, midsummer. the big fight will be immigration. the house will sit back and wait for the senate to act on that measure. but overriding all of this is what will happen in march when the automatic spending cuts known as the sequester kicks in and march 27th when if no resolution is reached the

partial government shutdown would take place and see the president touch on all of the issues on tuesday and try to drum up some support within congress and get senate democrats on his side to underscore his message through votes on the floor and the coming weeks. >> regarding the cuts, the white house already again teeing up some of the information we'll likely hearsaying that the sequester cuts unemployment benefits by an average of 9.4% and the white house says 600,000 women and children lose the food and affecting jobs from the sequester. we know that the storyline is already being pointed. how the little guy, the every day person, the middle class family and those most in need in this country will really be those who suffer with these cuts according to the white house. >> that's right. and hearing a lot of concerns about furloughs, also, federal agencies and at contractors who rely and do work with the government. those possible layoffs happening

because of the billions of dollars of cuts that are going to happen. what you're going to see senate democrats do is push the buffett tax, a minimum level of tax for people making more than $1 million and that's going to pay for a lot of sequester, a lot of those cuts to take effect. republicans say more taxes is absolutely a non-starter. they want deeper spending cuts and the two parties at an impasse. we may have to wait until the sequester to take effect before any deal is reached. >> john brennan, the headline of "the national journal" says john brennan shows hagel how it's done. we had another drone attack today. seven people killed in pakistan. an area outside of pakistan. none are civilians according to u.s. officials. nevertheless, the dynamic there, the clearing of the chamber and some of the tough questions from democrats to brennan, how do you measure his performance yesterday and the answers he gave? >> you know, i think a

frustration was built around mostly the cia and the really hostile relationship between congress and the agency over the years and what lawmakers feel is the agency's failure to brief them adequately on a lot of secret operation that is are happening overseas. i think brennan is generally safe. he did perform satisfactory according to a lot of these -- the key democrats an some of the republicans on the panel and will get confirmed. i think that will happen in the next couple of weeks but look for the issue of the drone strikes and whether or not there needs to be more oversight to become a hot issue in the next weeks. >> senator bob menendez, he says this is nonsense, a set-up, if you will. smoke and mirrors by conservative bloggers and such and supporters feel the same way. we heard his first comments an we played on this investigation. >> he's trying to make this all about a smear campaign from a small group of people. but the real problem for bob

menendez is there have been reports that have surfaced showing he's taken action it appears on behalf of this mega donor who he's been involved with, and flown him to the dominican and had to repay him for some of the flights on the private jet. failed to disclose those initial i len facing an ethics inquiry here in the senate and possibly looking at either a fbi probe, something from the justice department, we're not quite clear on that aspect yet. but look, this is not good for bob menendez. just not clear when that's going to happen. >> all right. thank you very much. greatly appreciate you joining us today. up next, the hold-up over hagel. defense secretary leon panetta has to stay on the job until chuck hagel is confirmed by the senate. are republicans singling hagel out by delaying the vote? >> with the tradition of the senate, u.s. senators do not usually act this way at all. >> we'll get the latest.

and but first there's a lot going on today. here's things we thought you should know. karl rove said the american cross roads superpac is planning more ads attacking ashley judd. the democrat may be considering a run against senator republican leader mitch mcconnell. the superpac debuted an ad this week seeking to portray ashley judd as an inexperienced hollywood liberal who's not even a resident of kentucky. a hacker apparently accessed private photos between both former presidents and claims to have a list of family addresses and phone numbers and e-mails. those are the things we just thought you should know. but while getting an official farewell, he will be on the job until the senate armed services committee and the full senate vote on the nomination of chuck hagel. the vote is held up by senate republicans demanding he provide specific financial information of private corporations where he has served. they're demanding copies of every speech made in the past five years, a process "the washington post" conservative columnist says, quote, could be the most inept and disorganized confirmation effort in recent memories. joining me now, political editor for the associated press. donna, thank you so much for your time. >> thank you. >> let me play a little clip of rachel maddow's show last night honing in on the request being made directed to chuck hagel and perhaps the uniqueness of some of these requests. let me play rachel from last night. >> with respect to the tradition of the u.s. senate, u.s. senators do not usually act this way at all.

senators do not usually demand that nominees for the president's cabinet, even defense secretary like chuck hagel now, they do not usually demand that the nominees reveal private details about the companies they work for or the speeches they give and let alone withhold the support until they get it. it's not the way they've treated nominees before. >> if that's accurate, i have no reason not to believe so, why is chuck hagel held up regarding the finances and speeches and this kind of information some senators want? >> the republican opposition to senator hagel is pretty strong. and they have made demands for additional financial information. interestingly enough, just a few hours ago, senator levin the chairman of the committee sent a letter to the republicans saying what they're asking for is beyond the scope and he's indicated that he's going to press ahead with a vote next week. i understand it will probably come perhaps as early as

tuesday. >> so given that information you've just provided us, levin says this is beyond the scope and what rachel and others have pointed out so here we are, brennan's hearing yesterday, his senate hearing went well. handled some of the tough questions and seems that both of them will be confirmed eventually. but here we are with chuck hagel and still the hold around this process. what is likely to happen next? are we going to see another rare question pop up directed at hagel? >> well, the one thing that you don't want to do with presidential nominee is let it hang out there for several days. but i think the committee will probably vote sometime next week. it most likely will be a party line vote. and then you're in a situation where the senate is in recess the week after that so i don't expect any full senate action until after they get back. >> how much of this can i guess be pointed at chuck hagel and his performance?

did he just make perhaps a difficult situation even worse? that's what a lot of conservative columnists are saying. inept, disorganized and that if there's a deliberate attempt to obstruct, he added fuel to the fire with that performance. >> his confirmation hearing did not go well. he came off as halting, tentative, ill prepared. and there was a lot of fodder for his opponents. plus he was up against the fact that there are about, oh, i'd say five or six of the committee republicans who already plan to vote against him so they made it very tough for him. >> donna, we'll see the next step and thank you for that latest information, as well, on the decision by senator levin. >> thank you. >> thank you. former president bill clinton and comedy central's stephen colbert at a closed door session answering questions of the representatives, both in and

carolina. he said that she's going to win and she would be great and he asked assistant leader who's in the democratic house leadership of south carolina to endorse his sister. mr. clyburn was not ready to give that endorsement off the bat but a spirited moment that nancy pelosi really pulled out of the back pocket. no one was expecting him to show up. >> that's pretty good. back to former president bill clinton warning democrats to pivot from a defensive footing against republicans. what else did he warn of? >> it was interesting, tamron. he really spoke about how democrats need to be the party with the vision, especially on the idea of a budget. the senate democrats not passed a budget for some years and bill clinton said, look, go out there. tell people what we're for. have a ten-year plan and obviously austerity is popular, the idea of cut, cut, cut. we need to bring down the debt and have our ideas out there. the other interesting thing that clinton said is he's the original bubba talking to the

the massive search for a former los angeles police officer accused of killing three people and bound to kill more officers extended through southern california now in to mexico. authorities describe 33-year-old christopher dorner armed and dangerous. wanted in the murder of three people, including the police officer and a daughter of a former police captain. the burned out truck found yesterday afternoon in big bear, a mountain area outside of los angeles triggering a nonstop search through difficult weather. >> our commitment is to make sure that, number one, the deputies are safe in the search but in addition, making sure that this community is safe. we're going to continue searching until either we discover he left the mountain or we find him. one or the two. >> joining me now former fbi profiler, clint van zant. here we are again with a

situation where your expertise comes in. when's the plan here? this is a huge area. this man has been deliberate. this is planned out. we've read his writings indicating who he's targeting and why he believes he was somehow wronged. how do they find him? >> you're right. this is a very bright guy. we know that he allegedly tried to steal a boat in san diego south of where he did these homicides of which he is accused. he conveniently leaves his identification so we need it was him and then goes up to big bear mountain. doesn't just dump the truck, burned it up so we conveniently now find the truck. this is a guy that's way bright enough to make us go south, north. he could have easily fled south again. he probably had a way off that mountain. three different ways it's going to end, tamron. he'll commit suicide in some lonely spot. he is going to force law enforcement in to a shootout. or he's going to escape the

mountain, sit down and watch the story and see if the lapd assumes responsibility for all of the negative things he said they've done to him and others. >> when you look at the writings and one would assume and you tell me, you're the expert here, he has a plan. for him to end up in the mountains there knowing the weather conditions, knowing he'd have to -- if he's hiding out there, hide out for a length of time. is it likely he has a place there in mind and that's where he's hiding? >> i think he thought out a lot of what he did. that manifesto took a while to write. accumulated a lot of weapons, heavy weaponry. he has the vehicle. he planned very methodically. this is a guy who's been through police training, military counterterrorism training, assembled a lot of heavy weapons. he has the ability to put together both a confrontation with law enforcement as well as an escape plan so i don't think we can put anything by him and

he's probably the most significant threat one man threat to law enforcement that we have seen in a long time. >> absolutely. based on his training alone. clint? >> realize he's got a 50-caliber sniper rifle and he says a shoulder-fired missile to allow him not to blow up an armored personnel carrier but a helicopter. we talk about using drones, tamron. this is a perfect opportunity. not to blow him up but to put drones overhead with a heat-seeking capability to try to find this guy in the woods. he's a big man, 275 pounds. we ought to be able to pick up a heat signature in the snow if he's still outside some place. but who knows? he could be in a cabin. he could have had a car stashed up there and escaped already. that's the challenge of law enforcement. >> wow. all right. thank you very much. we'll keep the audience up to date. chris christie's weight made the headlines all week after appearing on david letterman and

now more on the massive storm affecting millions of people up and down the east coast. more than 100 flights canceled in the last hour. bringing the total of storm-related consolations to more than 4,000. understandably, a lot of passengers frustrated. >> well, we have been checking online. it is great. until we're on it and leaving, there's an element of unknown. >> i first got a call in the hotel room at 8:30 a.m. saying my 11:50 flight was canceled but when i called the airline, they had rescheduled us for 2:30 and currently that's delayed until 3:15. >> nbc's reporter joins us from laguardia. some passengers are told monday, tuesday the earliest to get out.

>> reporter: for sure. tamron, you know, the first thing you do walking in to an airport. you find a monitor to check the status of your flight. and if you're coming here a couple of hours in advance to get on the ft. worth/dallas flight, you're out of luck and some 3,000 flights across the country coming in and out of and throughout the united states have been canceled today. we understand that there are even flights canceled tomorrow. more than 1,000. the airlines have tried to get ahead of this storm, canceling the flights well in advance. some passengers, the good news for them is that the airlines, tamr tamron, also waved the cancelation fees to make it easier for passengers to change their plans. the airlines are hoping that they'll be able to put in to place some 200 pieces of equipment once the storm gets going tonight so that they can get the runways, the planes clean and maybe get operations back up and going before the weekend is over.
